Membership is not a qualification. It carries no designation and no entry in the public register, and it may not be presented as a credential. A credential is earned by assessment, in any discipline, and members and non-members sit the same examinations.

What a credential adds

A credential is earned by assessment in any discipline of the CBA Standards. Each of the four below follows its award, except the Code, which binds a candidate from the moment they register.

A designation

Each credential carries a designation — the programme code, such as CBA-FMA — which the holder may use after their name while the credential is current. The designation states the discipline; the register states the level.

The designations

An entry in the public register

Every credential resolves to a register entry showing the holder, the discipline, the level, the scheme version assessed against, the date of award, the expiry date and the current status. The entry is permanent: it changes status but is never removed.

The register

The Code of Professional Conduct

Members and candidates are bound by six obligations: to represent the credential accurately, to sit their own assessment, to declare truthfully, to act with integrity in professional work, to respect confidence and personal data, and to disclose conflicts.

The Code

Continuing professional development

A credential is valid for three years. Renewal requires sixty hours of evidenced professional development across the cycle, reviewed by CBA.

CPD and renewal

Standing

A credential has one of four statuses, and the register shows which. A change of status is recorded against the entry.

Current
The credential is valid. The designation may be used.
Expired
The validity period has passed without renewal. The record remains; the designation may not be used until renewed.
Suspended
Under the Code, for a stated period. The register shows the credential as not current.
Withdrawn
Under the Code, permanently. The register shows the credential as withdrawn.

Earning a credential

The route is the same for every candidate, member or not: enrol in a certification in any discipline of the CBA Standards, meet the requirements of its level, and pass the assessment. A member does it at member prices, and the credential is kept in the same account.

Prior learning does not exempt anyone from any part of the assessment. At Professional level, a relevant degree can reduce the years of experience required where the programme publishes a reduced figure. Reasonable adjustments to the conditions of the assessment are made on request. Both policies are published.
